Free Friday Dinner Sept 30 6-8pm!

Join us for another Friday night dinner for a free dinner!  After the dinner we will watch a short film from Spain and discuss its meaning.  We will share briefly how the themes of this film demonstrate God’s love.  This will be a great chance to enjoy a well-made film and have conversation practice. Afterward we will have our usual coffee house with desserts, coffee and tea, so it’s a great place to make new friends!  The Hooker Building is located near the Health Science Library on South Columbia St.  See it on the map here.

POSTPONED! International Friends’ Wives Club, Chapel of Cross Church on Franklin Street

This event has been postponed until Oct 11.

Dear wives of students and scholars: Join us once a month for a Ladies’ Tea. Each month we will meet to enjoy tea and snacks while learning about a craft, art or style of cooking.  This is a great chance to meet other women, practice English, and learn about other cultures.  The first Tea will be on Tuesday, September 27 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. Tea will be provided; feel free to bring a snack or dessert to share. Great Stories of the Bible first meeting this Thursday!

This group will meet Thursday nights and will focus on the most famous stories of the Bible, and by the end of the year you will have done an overview of the entire Bible!  Each week we will have dinner together and then talk about a famous story from the Bible.  It’s a great introduction and will give the chance for many interesting conversations about the meaning of life, the meaning of relationships, and what God is like.  There is no previous knowledge of the Bible required, and it’s a great time to make new friends, practice English, and learn an overview of the best-selling, most translated book in all of history!  Please email Jonathan at jpillai@unc.edu if you are coming and let us know if you need a ride there.  We will provide transportation at 6:45pm at the ATM machines on Raleigh Rd near Davis Library.  We can also take you home afterwards.

Small Group Bible Studies!

Our small group Bible studies are a great way to make friends, practice English, and have meaningful conversations about the most published, most translated and most famous book in history!  You do not have to be a Christian to attend.  These groups are designed to be discussion-oriented and to give you and introduction to Jesus and the Bible.  We hope you will join us!  (Both of these meetings are just welcome parties–the time of the weekly Bible study meetings will decided at these parties).

Undergrad Group, Wed, Sept 7th, 7pm, Lenior

This group will meet this Wednesday at 7pm in front of Lenior Dining Hall.  We will have dinner together at bottom of Lenior, get to know each other, and talk about when we will meet this semester.  There is no prior Christian background necessary–all are welcome!  For more information, email Anna at agiven@live.unc.edu.

The dinner will be catered by Chick-fil-a in University Mall.  After dinner discuss topics, such as “How to Relate to American Professors,” “How to Make Friends with Americans,”  and other practical tips on succeeding during your studies in America.  A great place to make new friends!  The Hooker Building is located near the Health Science Library  on South Columbia St.  See it on the map here.

Campus Tour and Franklin Street Hang Out; Tues. Aug 23rd, 7pm, Belltower
Meet at the Belltower at 7pm for a campus tour led by some seasoned UNC students. Learn everything from the best places to study on campus, the where to print for free, where to get football tickets, where to see free movies on weekends, and all the cool places to go on Franklin Street.  After we will go to Franklin together to get ice cream or bubble tea.  Great chance to make friends after your first day of class!

Ice Cream Social; Wed. Aug 24th, 4-6pm, Battle House
Join us for free ice cream and a meet-and-greet with other international students and Americans. A great way to hear about other events International Friends has to offer and meet lots of new friends! The Battle House is located near the intersection of Country Club Rd and Battle Ln, near the Forest Theatre and the Kenan Quad dormitories.  It is a big white house with big front yard. Hoedown Picnic, Fri. Aug 26th, 5:45pm, Carrboro Town Commons

Come with us to the Hoedown Square Dance and Picnic hosted by UNC student organization Cornerstone.  What’s a Hoedown?  It’s an American folk dance most popular in the rural South–but more importantly, it’s tons a fun and a very unique cultural experience that only comes around once a year! (See video here).  There will be barbeque pork, beans, sweet tea and other traditional southern food and dance lessons.  Bring your camera and join us for an unforgettable night!  Email us at UNCinternationalfriends@gmail.com for more info.  For transportation, meet at the ATMs near Davis library on Raleigh Rd at 5:45pm.  Tickets are on sale in the Pit between 10am-2pm ever day this week for $8 (at the Cornerstone table), or you can buy them at the hoe-down Friday night for $10.  This includes a full meal and the dance.

Day Trip to Topsail Beach, NC; Sat. Aug 27th, 7:45am-9pm
Join us for a day at one of North Carolina’s beautiful beaches. We will provide transportation and meet at 7:45am in front of Carmichael Dormitory, across from Kenan Stadium, and we will return around 9:00 pm.  Bring a lunch with you, and we’ll stop to eat some Southern American food at the famous Smithfield Barbeque on the way home.  Space in the vans is limited, so register early.
