International Friends at UNC will be joining dozens of other international students from all over NC and VA for a weekend retreat the the beautiful campground of Camp Hanes in Winston-Salem, NC for a weekend getaway! Come get away from the stress of campus with us to make new friends, enjoy nature, and hear interesting ideas about what the Bible has to say about relationships.

The topic of the retreat is “Created for Relationships.” Our main speaker is Eva Liu, the coordinator for International Student Ministry in Southern California with InterVarsity. We will also have interesting seminars and small group discussions about dating and singleness, marriage and family, can a scientist believe in God?, and growing as a follower of Jesus.

In addition to that, in our free time there will be exciting activities such as free time Saturday to hike the mountain together, or other great outdoor activities. The facilities are nice, and we will stay in cabins with bunk beds and bathrooms (don’t worry, no tents!)

The cost of the retreat is $67 for a single, $130 for a couple. If you would like to register, please email Jim Herman at jherman7@bellsouth.net. Scholarships are available if finances are a problem. Registration deadline is Feb 25th.

Fri Night Dinner with Line Dancing!

This Friday we have another Free Friday Night Dinner coming up, Fri Feb 10th at 6pm in the School of Public Health. We will be providing a free meal. After dinner an international student will share a little bit about spiritual journey toward God during his time in America. Then after that we are having dance lessons! We will be doing a traditional American line dance! Many of you have done this before with us and know how fun it is, so bring your friends! Feb 13th the world-famous Alvin Ailey Dance Company will be performing at UNC’s Memorial Hall. See more about them here. For students, tickets are only $10 with your OneCard. This will be an amazing evening of dance, and we want you to come with us! A group from International Friends will have dinner first and then go to the show together. If you would like to go, tickets are selling fast so you need to buy your ticket at the Box Office of Memorial Hall now for the Feb 13th show. This Friday we have another Free Friday Night Dinner coming up, Jan 27 at 6pm in the School of Public Health. We will be providing a free meal of chili and bread. After dinner we will do a game night and have our usual coffee house with desserts, coffee and tea, so it’s a great place to make new friends! Also wanted to remind you about our new Bible Discussion Group that kicks off tomorrow called Christianity Explored! Is it possible there is a God? Did Jesus claim to be God? What difference would God make in my life? Join us as we explore Christianity together in a friendly discussion group. Welcome back to a new semester! We hope you all had a great holiday and are refreshed for the New Year. We’ve missed you! But we wanted to let you know about our first Friday Night Dinner of the year, this Friday, Jan 13 at 6pm in the School of Public Health. We will be providing a free meal of lasagna, bread and salad.

As you may know, Monday Jan 16 is a national holiday when we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, an African American who was very influential in fighting for justice for black people during America’s civil rights movement. We will have a special guest speaker with us, Fred Williams who works with an African American Christian ministry in Raleigh. He vividly remembers Dr Martin Luther King and was profoundly impacted by him growing up in segregated NC where black people did not have the same rights as white people. He will share about his experience during this time, about Dr King, and about why racial reconciliation is important for all of us now, no matter what country we live in. We hope you will join us to learn about this important aspect of American society.

We will also have our usual coffee house with desserts, coffee and tea, so it’s a great place to make new friends! The Hooker Building is located near the Health Science Library on South Columbia St. See it on the map here.

Women’s Christmas Tea, Tues, Dec 6, 2:30pm

Dear wives of students and scholars: Join us once a month for a Ladies’ Tea. Each month we will meet to enjoy tea and snacks while learning about a craft, art or style of cooking. This is a great chance to meet other women, practice English, and learn about other cultures. The Tea will be on Tuesday, Dec 6 from 2:30 – 4:30 PM. Tea will be provided and we will decorate Christmas cookies; feel free to bring a snack or dessert to share. Come join International Friends as we celebrate perhaps the most important American holiday of the year–Christmas! We will enjoy a delicious traditional Christmas meal together, followed by a performance of a short play by 4th and 5th graders from Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh of the Christmas story. After the play a UNC graduate student will also share what Christmas means to him and how a relationship with Jesus has changed his life. It will be a great time to meet new friends, connect with old friends, and learn more about how Americans celebrate Christmas and what the meaning behind this significant holiday is.
